Much of Warrnambool’s native vegetation has been historically cleared with the municipality now consisting of only 9.4% canopy cover. Saying that, Lake Pertobe is home to an endangered plant community called Swamp Scrub. Leptospermum lanigerum Woolly Tea-tree forms the overstorey which grows along streams or on poorly drained sites. This remnant Swamp scrub has been able to exist at Lake Pertobe due to freshwater soaks and springs. Swamp Scrub is home to native wildlife and is essential to preserving species across Warrnambool.
